A Quote From Haiti or A Little Something To Smile About
Thursday, January 14th, 2010

One of my favorite books is Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder. It tells the story of Dr. Paul Farmer who Kidder called, “A man who would cure the world.” His story further inspired me to choose a career in medicine. The work of the organization he helped start, Partners In Health, provides medical care in Peru, Siberia, and Haiti. The tragic earthquake in Haiti has been on my mind a whole lot lately and made me remember a quote from the book detailing the difficulties of life in Haiti:
“”How could a just God permit great misery? The Haitian peasants answered with a proverb: “Bondye konn bay, men li pa konn separe,” in literal translation, “God gives but doesn’t share.” This meant… God gives us humans everything we need to flourish, but he’s not the one who’s supposed to divvy up the loot. That charge was laid upon us.”"
— Tracy Kidder
I’m glad to see governments, organizations, and individuals step up to provide relief to Haiti. I pray it continues. Thoughts…
Weddings. Some people choose a church, beach, courthouse, or Whole Foods Market. Yes, I said Whole Foods Market, my favorite store! A lovely couple chose to make the cafe the location for their nuptials in the Florida Whole Foods where they met. It’s the sweetest story I’ve read in a while. One can truly get married anywhere they please because in the end it’s about the marriage not the wedding. Okay all this Whole Foods talk has me craving a Samosa, maybe lunch tomorrow. Thanks for reading. Adios
