Beyond Comedy (or) Fictional Encouragement

Beyond Comedy or Fictional Encouragement

The Cosby Show. If it’s been a while since you’ve seen an episode I suggest at least checking out a few clips on YouTube. In the midst of television’s current obsession with reality shows, it’s a pleasant refresher to take a trip down memory lane to watch a classic sitcom. Every episode guarantees a good laugh based on Bill Cosby’s antics alone (check out the above clip for an example). But The Cosby Show went beyond comedy.

The best part of the Cosby Show is that it exemplified an upbeat and cohesive family. The anchor of the family was the relationship between Cliff and Claire. They were the quintessential husband and wife that balanced busy lives in the workplace and at home while still maintaining a sizzling relationship. Many episodes end as Cliff and Claire lounge in their bedroom wearing matching pajama sets recapping the latest situation in the lives of the Huxtalbes or reminiscing about a past memory involving just them. I don’t know about matching pajamas, but I look forward to ending many nights with wifey in the same way.

Watching our daughter mesmerized by the Cosby Show was a crazy moment in time. Seeing her love the show we grew up with was so surreal. She decided to have a lazy Saturday and had a Cosby Show Season 2 marathon. In between studying I found myself captivated by episodes throughout the day. I look at it differently now. No longer do I see Rudy and identify with her as I did when I was my daughter’s age but instead I see myself and Pierce in Cliff and Claire.

The fiction characters Mr. & Mrs. Huxtable had many worthy and admirable traits of a real life married couple. They laughed together, agreed to disagree, respected one another, and above all had genuine love. I see so much of how Pierce and I are and where we want to be. They are successful in their respective career, something Pierce and I are working towards each day as students. Their house was bustling with family and friends. They were active in their community. I could really go on and on, but truthful art imitates real life. Positive marriage encouragement is great even in fiction. I recommend buying a season and enjoying the Cosby’s with your spouse.
