Simple Brown Chair (or) Not Just A Shirt

Simple Brown Chair or Not Just A Shirt

This is the chair. This is the place my wife sat when I said the most nerve racking words of my life. It’s not that I wasn’t sure of what my then girlfriend’s response was going to be (I had a pretty good feeling she would say yes), but I knew I would have only one opportunity to get it right. In the end, my marriage proposal was a success. Now, my wife and I have a memory and a story to share for life.

Today, we are celebrating our engagement anniversary. There are several dates that we remember for various milestones. We remember them because they bring back great memories and who doesn’t like a celebration?

The other great part of engagements is that they always have a story. I’m not usually the most excited to talk about romance, but my ears always perk up when I hear someone talk about their engagement. I want to know the answer to the all important question, “How did it go down?” Was it planned? Was it spontaneous? Was it straight forward or was it creative? Our engagement was planned and what I like to think was creative. I made index cards with pictures and poems highlighting the road of our relationship and set them up in a path leading this simple brown chair.

Pictured above is a shirt but for me it’s not just a shirt. It’s how the story of Pierce and I began…twice. On chilly night (Feb. 28, 2006 to be exact) I reluctantly went out with a girlfriend after a basketball game. As fate would have it Pierce was playing in that game and ended up at the same location. I was having a mediocre time and then he walked in. Smiling, glowing actually, he sat across the room. I had to meet him so my friend took it upon herself to introduce us. We went and dance for five songs straight. I was wearing the above blue shirt and our story began.

Fast forward to November 11, 2007, I was stepping out for a friend’s birthday. Pierce was going to hang out at my apartment while I was out. I got ready and decided to wear the above blue shirt. I realized I hadn’t worn it since February the previous year! Out I went and had a nice time. When I came home it happened. Without going into the whole proposal and all of my tears; the man of my dreams asked me to be his wife.

My blue shirt is my lucky shirt. I don’t really believe in luck but it has a pretty cool story. I don’t know when I’ll wear it again but my guess is something amazing will happen when I do.
