A spouse should be willing to go above and beyond for their husband/wife, but what happens when they do and there is nothing to show for it? What would it be like to walk a thousand miles for your spouse only to get there and find out that they hopped on a plane and were already back where you started? Was the trip worth it or just a big waste of time?
I didn’t walk a thousand miles to get wifey a bicycle but I did go above and beyond. I was happy to do it. She had the summer dream of spending time cycling around on a beautiful vintage bicycle. On a weekend trip to my home state of Iowa we found what seemed like the perfect bicycles for both of us. At the time, we could only transport mine back to Omaha. The original plan was for Brittany to make the four hour roundtrip drive to Des Moines and back at the end of the week when she had a free afternoon. However, I had a top secret mission in mind as I set the alarm one morning for 4:45 AM and made the journey to make my wife’s dream come true.
The result of my chivalrous deed was this: a sore butt and a disappointed wifey. This wasn’t the bicycle for her. In the end, my secret mission was a flop, but I am still glad I embarked on an above and beyond journey for my wife (although I would have enjoyed those extra few hours of sleep!).

Searching far and wide for a vintage bicycle. This was my mission this past summer. We found a bike with the help of Pierce’s mom. I thought it would be neat to take leisure rides on my cute bike with a basket on beautiful days.
The reality was that my vintage bicycle was pretty crappy. The seat killed my butt, it was squeaky, and overall a horrible ride on hills. I realized that this cute vintage bike was meant for leisure rides on trails and flat terrain only. I sent the bike away thinking I wouldn’t find a bike at all. The saying is “you find love when you aren’t looking” was true for my bike. I ended up finding the bike of my dreams in my mom’s garage. She hadn’t ridden it since 1998 and it was now mine. My new bike spent a few days in the repair shop (new pedals, chains, brakes). Essentially, I ended up with a brand new mountain bike!
The weather is a lot cooler now than when I first set out to find the perfect bike. I’ve been out for rides a few times and it’s a blast. The best part is the workout I get from riding. I’m so happy I found my purple bike; it’s perfect for me in every way.
